Our upcoming exhibition 'South Asian Modern Art 2020' runs at the gallery from July 23 - 14 August.
The exhibition will consist of works from collections in Europe and the USA, by artists including Francis Newton Souza, Maqbool Fida Husain and Sayed Haider Raza, as well as paintings by Sadequain, Ali Imam and a collection of etchings by Chughtai.
The John Scott Everton collection of paintings by Jamini Roy will also be displayed. These were acquired by the ex-US Ambassador to Burma in the late 1950s/early 1960s.
FN Souza is represented by oils from the 1950s and 60s, including a work executed in Barcelona in November 1958. 'Head of a Man With Glasses' is mentioned in a letter from Souza to Victor Musgrave where the artist writes that this painting marks for him the switch from painting on hardboard to canvas 'although it is five or ten times more expensive.'
Paintings by NS Bendre and KK Hebber from the 1950s will also be displayed, as will an early work by Laxman Pai, depicting a procession in Goa, painted in 1949.
