I cannot explain my work because it is intuitive although you may feel it's calculated and measured. I am just like you when looking at my work; an outsider. What you see is what you see.
Imran Mir
We are delighted to announce the first exhibition of the work of Imran Mir at the gallery, taking place from the 29th November - 20th December, 2024.
The exhibition opens on Friday, 29 November with an introduction to the Artist's work by Nour Aslam. With recollections from friends and contemporaries of Imran.
Imran Mir (1950-2014), the renowned Pakistani artist, sculptor, and designer, often defied conventional paths.
The contemplative nature of Mir's work offers insight into how physics and the sonic are dynamically related. Much like theoretical essays or theses, his work elaborates on mathematics in general, and geometry in particular. Yet, for Mir, practicing art was sustenance, a getaway from the demands of daily life.
Although his work initially left art critics puzzled, he later earned recognition for his daring experiments with color and form. He referred to his works as 'Papers' on modern art, treating each body of work as seriously as a theoretical paper.
Beyond his artistic practice, Imran Mir played a pivotal role in various educational and philanthropic endeavors. He co-founded the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in Karachi and actively supported the establishment of Pakistan's first Museum of Modern Art.
Throughout his life, Mir remained committed to constant evolution and change, leaving an indelible mark on the world of art, design, and philanthropy.
In recent years his work has been exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Kuntsmuseum Gelsenkirchen and is currently on display in Doha as part of the exhibition MANZAR: Art and Architecture of Pakistan.
