Born in East Sussex in 1861, Olivier taught at the Bombay School of Art throughout the 1880s and it is during this period that this work likely dates to. In 1885 he exhibited a number of works from India at the Fine Art Society, London. Today he is best known for his commissioned portraits along with his work as Official War Artist from 1917-1924; with his works being held in many notable collections including those of the Imperial War Museum and the British Government. He is also noted for being an uncle of the actor Laurence Olivier (British, 1907-1989).
